It might be the chairmanship that nobody wants.
Still, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst told me Tuesday that he would appoint the Select Committee on Redistricting. He didn't name a chairman, but said he had a senator in mind.
Redistricting can be one of the most divisive issues in politics. It's also one of the most boring, complete with maps, numbers and court cases.
In 2003 Republicans pushed for a rare, mid-season redistricting plan that led to two quorum-busting walkouts by Democrats. The senators fled to Albuquerque, and I drew the tough assignment of staying with them at Marriott. For this trip, I recommend the Democratic senators help the California economy and flee to Napa Valley.
