PA: Pols Lining up House Leadership

At 3 p.m., House Democrats meet behind closed doors to cast secret ballots for leadership posts for the next two-year session, starting in January.

A key question is whether 20-year leader Bill DeWeese retains a role - he’s running for majority whip, the No. 3 spot in the Democratic-controlled House - after leading a caucus that’s rope-tied to an ongoing corruption probe.

Last summer, state Attorney General Tom Corbett charged a dozen individuals with using government employees and millions of tax dollars for political campaigns and cash rewards for political work.

A Historic Day in the Oklahoma Senate

"I think this is certainly a historic day," said Glenn Coffee, Republican Senate leader, ahead of Tuesday's ceremony in the Senate chamber. It will be the first time a Republican majority has been sworn into office.

"I and other people have been working hard for this day," Coffee said. "We will be able to catch our breath and celebrate a little bit."

Republicans also picked up four seats on the Oklahoma House during the Nov. 4 general election to increase their majority to 61-40. The 101-member House became Republican for the first time in eight decades in 2004.

Ohio GOP Works to End Disputed Vote Window

Republicans who control the Ohio Senate want to get rid of a disputed weeklong period during which new voters can register and then immediately cast a ballot, a top official said Monday.

Republicans planned to file a bill Tuesday that would require people choosing to vote early to register at least 30 days before they cast their ballot, Senate GOP Chief of Staff Matt Schuler said. For instance, someone who wished to vote on the first day of early voting - 35 days before Election Day - would then have to register to vote at least 65 days before the election.

The requirement that voters who vote on Election Day be registered at least 30 days before Election Day would not be changed.
